International Studies And History
To enable students understand better the complex forces that will determine the shape of the 21st century, Christ University in 2014 introduced an MA programme in IS with an interdisciplinary approach . Broadly defined, international studies include the dynamics of interstate relations; the interplay of cultural, ideological, economic, and religious factors; and the multifaceted structures of Asian, African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and European societies
A global environment demands expertise in international affairs to comprehend the contemporary world shaped by global processes – from the inter-connectedness of business and finance to ethnic violence, terrorism and to the struggles for self-determination. Moreover, in a world characterized by increased international cooperation and the need to be knowledgeable about the other areas of the globe is necessary in most spheres of work. To that extent, globalization of economic, political, social and cultural developments has created new opportunities and challenges for tomorrow’s citizens. Accordingly Christ University has designed an inter-disciplinary post graduate program that focuses on development and the environment, political and economic aspects of globalization, human rights, peace and conflict, and international law and organizations. As an inter-disciplinary program, students integrate and apply knowledge across disciplines in order to analyze global issues and problems.
The Master of Arts in International Studies is attributed to our multi-disciplinary faculty that draws members from the humanities, social sciences law and management. It equips students with analytical and critical skills to understand contemporary international politics, and prepare them for a range of professions that require knowledge of international affairs. It offers diverse fields of study: International Relations, International Law, International Political Economy, International Economics, World History, Strategic Studies, Areas Studies – Europe, South East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia and Africa; besides research methodology.
The program addresses contemporary developments that impact the governance of societies across the globe, from terrorism to public sector reform. It covers a spectrum of areas that include the study of globalization, development, democracies, and processes of state formation, International Organizations, Theories of International Relations, International Political Economy, International Security, Global Environmental Politics, Asia-Pacific and Northeast Asian Politics. Therefore the program offers a range of papers that makes one knowledgeable about the forces and institutions that shape the relations between states and the governance of societies across the globe.
Students would have the potential to develop a strong educational base to successfully attempt the civil services exam which opens avenues to careers in administration, diplomacy, intelligence; besides compete for jobs in the corporate sector, related to exports which would require knowledge of other countries. Other sectors of employment would be International Organizations, Think Tanks, Media and Management consulting firms. Importantly the program would be particularly relevant for those interested in higher study at the PhD level, to obtain a deeper understanding of international politics.
This program provides a comprehensive and an in-depth orientation in the approaches to comprehend the character of contemporary international societies. It is designed to give graduates who participate in this program the expertise and skills appropriate for a range of public and private sector careers where an advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary international societies is integral to their work. Another aspect of the course would be an emphasis on written assignments that enables development of writing skills which is so necessary for learning in social sciences.
We seek to deepen scholarly understanding of government, politics and international relations and to contribute to practical solutions to problems of power, conflict and injustice in political and social life. Our research is organised through the three intersecting fields of Government and Politics, Political Theory and International Relations; our approach is inter-disciplinary with roots in history, philosophy and social science, both statistical and interpretive and ethnographic. We emphasize the rigorous interaction of epistemology and methodology, with developing techniques and methods, and the highest standards of scholarship, to produce research that has impact both academically and publicly.
Languages
The Department of Languages which exists since the inception of the institution in 1969, presently offers Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and French. Coming under the Deanery of Humanities and Social Sciences, the named languages are offered as second language in all the UG programmes. In addition, French is offered in BHM, BCA, BBA F & IB, MBA (T&T) and MA in Int. Studies, and German in BCA and MBA Programmes as elective papers. The Department offers ten languages – Spoken Kannada, Vedic Maths, Wikipedia Training, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese as choice based certificate courses to all disciplines across the University. Since 2016 -17, the Department has an agreement signed with Alliance Française de Bangalore and Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore to offer international certification for the DELF courses which correspond to two levels (A1 & A2) in the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
While the Indian languages are presented in their historical and cultural form, the foreign languages provide all the cross cultural nuances to the young students who are on the threshold of geographical and professional mobility. In an attempt to redefine the role of second language in the curriculum of higher education, the Department has moved from just the study of ‘second language’ to the study of language, literature and culture. This happens along with the honing of language skills. The curriculum includes art forms like music, theatre, painting, sculpture and films to introduce the students to the five decade old Indian civilisation and culture and, to offer them an aesthetic experience. As a major innovative pedagogy, the students are encouraged to share their cultural knowledge imbibed from their family and community through Bhasha Parishat or Centre for Culture. The spirit behind the whole exercise is to see the glorious tradition of Indian heterogeneous culture with a diachronic and synchronic approach. The Wikipedia project undertaken by the Indian language students in association with the Centre for Internet and Society for the digitalization of literary texts is the largest platform in Asia.
Bhasha Utsav and Ethnic Day is the major festival of the Department which brings together the entire University as one family.
The Kannada Sangha, Publication wing of the Department of Kannada, renowned all over the country, has to date 243 publications to its credit.
