1、The 4 Masters
Lalaji Maharaj
1873 A.D. – 1931 A.D.
Shri Ram Chandra of Fatehgarh, affectionately known as Lalaji, was the first guru in the Heartfulness tradition. He revived the ancient art of yogic transmission so that all seekers with sincere interest in their evolution could experience the highest expansion of consciousness.
It was Lalaji’s conviction that family life was most conducive to self-development. In fact, he credited his wife with inspiring him and keeping him alert on the path of truth.
By nature Lalaji was always calm, but easily moved by the pains and pleasures of others. Rarely was he angered. Not given to superfluous talk, he was adept at using language to communicate his thoughts and captivate the hearts of his listeners. His personality, mode of living and general behaviour earned Lalaji the affection and respect of everyone.
Lalaji could bring about the spiritual awakening in a person with a blink of his eyelids, but displays of any kind were not liked by him. For removing various complexities of the heart, he asked his followers to make friends of their enemies. He regarded morality as essential to Self-Realization and love as the greatest practice. He taught that afflictions are divine blessings holding many secrets.
When he was not at his office, Lalaji imparted training to seekers and at night he transmitted to them until two o’clock in the morning. After his retirement in 1929, he began giving all his time to spiritual work, spending two to three hours every day dictating books, articles and letters. He was a great scholar of Urdu, Persian and Arabic, and had a sound knowledge of Hindi and Sanskrit.
Lalaji led a simple and pious life. His name spread far and wide, and many people approached him for solace and spiritual guidance. He never turned anyone away without blessing them with spiritual progress. He was himself blessed with a melodious voice, and his songs had the power to touch the very soul of his audience. It is because of the work done by this great guide that today, Heartfulness is able to offer a simple and effective practice to all interested seekers of spirituality.
The art of transmission was passed from Lalaji to Shri Ram Chandra of Shahjahanpur (known as Babuji), who became the second guide in the Heartfulness tradition.
Babuji Maharaj
1899 A.D.– 1983 A.D.
Babuji was born on 30th April 1899 in the north Indian town of Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh). From an early age, he displayed a craving for spiritual realization that overshadowed all other interests.
He held the position of clerk in the district court of Shahjahanpur for more than thirty years. He was married at the age of nineteen and his wife, Bhagwati, bore him two daughters and four sons before her death in 1949.
In June 1922, at the age of twenty-two, he met Lalaji, who recognized Babuji as the person who had appeared in his dream years before as his successor.
Though there were very few meetings between guru and disciple before Lalaji left his physical body in 1931, Babuji was in perpetual remembrance of Lalaji and insisted that he could not live for a second without his inner guidance. Babuji believed that evolution of consciousness is the birthright of all and should be offered freely to sincere seekers everywhere. He believed that a true Guru is the ultimate servant, and he lived his life serving all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, gender or nationality. He taught that material and spiritual life go hand in hand, like the two wings of a bird, and that the normal life of a householder is the best environment in which to learn the twin virtues of love and sacrifice. Accordingly, he simplified and perfected the system of raja yoga so that everyone could practice and benefit from it.
He advised his followers not to be discouraged by their faults and shortcomings, but to let go of mistakes, resolving not to repeat them again. He reminded them that it is in the present that we develop our character and thus create a brighter future.
Babuji was, by nature, the humblest of people and had immense faith in his guru. He was confident that seekers of every culture and nationality would embrace the simple and effective practices that he offered. In 1972, he took the Heartfulness method to Europe and America, accompanied by his attendant, Shri Parthasarathi Rajagopalachari of Chennai. Parthasarathi, known to his associates as Chariji, was later chosen to succeed Babuji as the third guru in the Heartfulness tradition.
Chariji Maharaj
1927 A.D – 2014 A.D.
Shri Parthasarathi Rajagopalachari, also known as Chariji, was born in Vayalur (near Chennai) in the south of India.
Chariji’s conscious spiritual aspirations were awakened at the age of eighteen when he heard a lecture on the Bhagavad Gita, but he continued with his studies, and graduated from Benares Hindu University with a Bachelor of Science degree. His first job was in chemical engineering after which he spent two years in Yugoslavia studying plastics manufacturing techniques.
He married in 1955 and joined the T. T. Krishnamachari group of companies the same year, soon rising to the position of executive director to one of the companies in the group. His work required him to travel extensively in India and abroad, establishing a pattern of world travel that he continued throughout his life, both professionally and then in his role as a Heartfulness guide.
In 1964 Chariji was introduced to the Heartfulness practice and several months later met Babuji. From his first meeting with Babuji, as he wrote in his book, My Master, “I knew immediately and intuitively that I had found the person who alone could be my Master and lead me to my goal.”
While continuing to fulfill his familial and business responsibilities, Chariji was assiduous in his spiritual practice and fervent in his devotion towards Babuji. He dedicated himself to helping Babuji actualize his vision for humanity.
Chariji accompanied Babuji on extensive travels throughout India. Following the arrival in India of Europeans drawn to Babuji and his teachings, Chariji in 1972 accompanied Babuji on the first of a series of overseas journeys to Europe and America. They met aspirants, conducted meditations, gave talks, answered questions. A relationship of loving interdependence grew between them.
During his lifetime, Babuji nominated Chariji as his successor and in 1983 when Babuji passed on, Chariji took over as his spiritual representative. He dedicated himself to continuing the work Babuji had started and furthering his vision for humanity. Under his leadership the organisation Babuji had set up proliferated both in India and to more than one hundred other countries. At the time of Chariji’s death membership had increased from 5,000 – as it had been in Babuji’s time – to 500,000. It has always been founded on volunteer work and funded by donations.
Chariji proved himself to be what Babuji had defined as the ideal human – a Western mind with an Eastern heart.
As well as being a brilliant orator, his capacity to work seemed almost superhuman. In spite of the numbers of people who came to see him and whom he met in the course of his travels, he was renowned for his willingness to engage with individuals who came to him freely. Tens of thousands of individuals have stories of one-to-one meetings with him that transformed their lives.
He wrote and published over one hundred books. His book, My Master, a tribute to his beloved Babuji, has been translated into 20 languages. Other books include diaries of his overseas travels with Babuji, an autobiography and numerous volumes of his talks in India and abroad representing and amplifying his Master’s teaching.
From 2008, Chariji suffered from ill-health and in 2010, Chariji used the technology of the day to let all his followers know that Kamlesh D. Patel was to be his successor on his passing. This was his way of ensuring that right from the start, there would be full support for him in what had become an enormous task. From this day, until his eventual passing, they were nearly always together.
Chariji passed away on 20th December 2014, passing on the role of the global Heartfulness guide to Shri Kamlesh D. Patel, affectionately known as Daaji.
Kamlesh D Patel
(1956 – Present)
Kamlesh D. Patel is an original voice in an ancient tradition. Known to many as Daaji, his teachings on Heartfulness Meditation arise from his personal experience, while reflecting his deep spirit of enquiry and respect for the world’s great spiritual traditions and scientific advancements.
Born in Gujarat in 1956, Daaji displayed an early interest in meditation and spirituality. He started Heartfulness Meditation at the age of nineteen, while studying to be a pharmacist. Soon after, he met his first Guru, Babuji, the second guide in the Heartfulness lineage. After graduating with honours from L.M. College of Pharmacy in Ahmedabad, Daaji married and moved to New York City. There, he and his wife raised their two sons, while he steadily built a successful pharmacy business. At the same time, Daaji continued to pursue his love of meditation as a devoted disciple of Babuji’s successor, Chariji. Over the years, Daaji played an increasingly active role in the Heartfulness Movement, both organisationally and by spreading its message and teaching its method. In 2011, Chariji selected Daaji as his spiritual successor.
As the leader of the Heartfulness Movement, Daaji now fulfils the many duties of a modern-day guru, travelling widely and extending his support to seekers everywhere. Daajifirmly believes in nourishing today’s youth with practical self-management tools and universal values. Under his guidance, students and faculty in over 2,500 schools, universities, and colleges are now benefitting from a portfolio of value-based self-development programs.
As a self-professed student of spirituality, Daaji devotes much of his time and energy to his personal research in the field of spirituality and consciousness, and regularly shares his findings through public speaking engagements, his website and social media platforms, and in broadcast, print, and digital media. Daaji’s articles have appeared in various leading publications including Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, Times of India, and Business Standard. His well-received Radio City Swaran series, Dil Ki Awaaz, ran for twelve episodes.
Daaji advocates bridging ancient tradition with modern scientific understanding, and has assembled a team of one hundred scientists to research the physiological and genetic effects of meditation and yogic transmission. He believes in approaching spirituality with scientific methodology – a practical approach stemming from his own experience and mastery in the field. As he often says, “You are the experimenter, the experiment, and also its result.”
Daaji’swish is for Heartfulness Meditation to be available to every household around the world. Under his guidance, Heartfulness organisations offer free meditation training at thousands ofHeartspots and Retreat Centres in 130 countries, and Heartfulness trainers are available worldwide for individual and group meditation in person or remotely via the Let’s Meditate app for iPhone and Android.
